In business school, we talk a lot about ROI, or Return on Investment. Recently, I’ve started thinking about ROI in a different way: what’s the return on rest, on nutrition, or on mental health?
Balancing my MBA, CBESS responsibilities, and personal projects has taught me that self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s an investment. When I get enough sleep, eat well, and make time to move my body, I show up sharper, more creative, and more compassionate. Those are the same qualities that make great leaders, teammates, and professionals.
This semester, I’ve been more intentional about how I take care of myself. Between classes and work meetings, I carve out small breaks to stretch, go for a walk, or grab a snack that fuels me instead of drains me. On the days when I stick to my routine, like making it to Pilates on Mondays or prepping healthy meals on Sundays, I notice a huge difference in how focused and energized I feel throughout the week.
It’s also changed how I lead. At CBESS, I oversee student teams, coordinate events, and help manage a $1.2 million program. That means people rely on me to be present and at my best. I’ve realized that taking care of my health helps me show up for others with patience, empathy, and confidence. When I’m rested, I’m more creative in problem-solving, and I can lead with clarity rather than burnout.
Now, I track my wellness goals just like I track my academic or professional goals. I celebrate the small wins, such as finishing a book, cooking a home meal, or choosing an early bedtime over another late-night scroll. The truth is, you can’t pour from an empty cup. You can’t build a business, lead a team, or chase your dreams if you’re running on fumes.
Invest in yourself this week. Whether it’s a nap, a walk, or a moment to breathe, take one action today that supports your wellbeing. You are your most important asset.
