If there is one thing my time with CBESS and UNR has taught me, it is that community is not built overnight; it is built one conversation at a time. Every event, meeting, or simple hallway chat carries the potential to create connection. Working alongside mentors and peers has shown me how powerful it can be when people truly listen to one another. Those moments of understanding, encouragement, and collaboration are what turn individuals into a community.

I used to think leadership was about speaking up. Now I realize it is just as much about listening. Some of the most impactful moments in my role have come from quiet conversations: when a student shared a personal challenge, or when a parent expressed gratitude for the resources we provided through CBESS. These exchanges remind me that every voice matters and every interaction can spark change.

Community work has also taught me to value consistency over perfection. Showing up whether to organize an event, check in on a teammate, or celebrate a small win builds trust. It is easy to underestimate how far a kind word or a genuine “How are you?” can go. I once read a LinkedIn article on mentorship that said, “Leadership is influence, and influence begins with care.” I have found that to be true in every space I have entered.

As I continue to grow personally and professionally, I want to carry that same energy into everything I do: to lead with empathy, uplift others, and build bridges wherever I go. When we make space for others, we all rise together.

Reach out to someone in your circle today. Send a text, ask how they are doing, or invite them for coffee. Connection starts with you.

    Hi Aileen,
I really appreciate your reflection on how community is built one conversation at a time. I love how you highlighted listening as an essential part of leadership. It is easy to focus on speaking up, but so much growth happens when we truly hear others. Your point about consistency over perfection really resonated with me. Small gestures like checking in or celebrating a teammate’s win can create so much trust and connection. I also love your call to action at the end. It is simple but powerful and reminds all of us that building community starts with the little things we do every day.

Thank you so much, Gia. Your message truly made me smile. I’m glad the part about community being built through small, consistent moments resonated with you because that is something I’m learning more and more in my own journey. It’s so true that listening builds just as much trust as speaking up, and those little check-ins or celebrations can make people feel seen in such a meaningful way. I really appreciate you taking the time to share this. It means a lot that the call to action connected with you too.

Thank you so much, Nick. I really appreciate your kind words. Community really does grow through every conversation, and it means a lot that the message came through clearly for you. Listening is such a simple skill on the surface, but it makes such a big difference in how we lead and show up for others. Thanks again for reading and for sharing your thoughts.

I totally agree that to be a leader you almost have to be better at listening than sharing and talking. The quote that always sticks with me is “Be interested and be interesting.” You attract people by being vulnerable with them and giving them the space and comfort to be vulnerable back.

Thank you, Serena. I really love the quote you shared, and it fits so perfectly with this idea. Listening with intention really does create space for people to show up as themselves, and I think that is where the strongest connections start. Vulnerability can feel scary, but it is also what makes leadership feel real and human. I appreciate you adding this perspective.

Thank you so much, Jon. I really appreciate you taking the time to read it. Those small moments matter more than we realize, and I’m glad that part stood out to you. Showing up, listening, and being intentional can feel simple, but they shape so much of the way we connect with others. Thanks again for your thoughtful comment.
