For a long time, networking made me think of name tags and small talk. I used to believe success meant knowing the right people, but I have learned that connection is about being the right person: curious, intentional, and genuine. Through CBESS, Siglo XXI, and countless university events, I have seen how much stronger relationships become when you show up as yourself.
Now, as I transition into full-time work, I am seeing how this lesson carries into every professional space I enter. It is not about collecting business cards or LinkedIn connections. It is about finding shared purpose and building relationships that inspire growth on both sides. Some of my best opportunities came from authentic conversations that started with curiosity rather than strategy.
Authentic connection starts when you stop performing and start listening. It means remembering that the person across from you is also trying to learn, grow, and belong. When I began asking real questions and sharing honest experiences, I found that people responded not to my title or résumé but to my story.
If networking feels forced, try reframing it as connection. The next time you meet someone new, ask what excites them or what they are working toward. You might find that shared purpose can open more doors than any business card ever could.
Reach out to one person you admire this week and start a real conversation with no agenda, just connection.
